IRC with N800

For reasons not specified here, I had to get IRC working on some level with my N800.
The easiest way would’ve been to use web-irc, but I wanted a better solution. First I tried to find an irc-client, but didn’t. The I tried using gaim with irc-protocol, and ended up cursing the program to the hottest and deepest parts of hell. (that program should be made illegal by law)
The I deciced to try osso-xterm and ssh to a server where irssi was already running in screen. All went well until I tried to ssh from xterm to the server - I needed the ssh. For some reason I had trouble locating openssh or dropbear, and hence decided to tell you where they can be found. Maybe other people doesn’t have to google so much in the future for this little feat. So, the repository you’ll need in Application manager is Maemo Hackers:
Maemo Hackers
http://maemo-hackers.org/apt
Distribution: bora
Components: main
Just install osso-xterm and dropbear-client. Happy IRCing, if thats your thing…
Update:
As ossi1967 pointed out, there is an IRC-application called X-Chat for maemo. I’ve actually used it before - silly me ![]()

I installed the advanced osso-term and openssh from the main maemo downloads page, and it works fine. The advanced term is a bit more useful (IMHO) and also allows input from the thumb keyboard, which I prefer for typing longer messages (although you can’t see the screen at the same time)
I use X-Chat on my 770; doesn’t it work on the N800?

It has some minor bugs and UI problems but in general works fine for me.
I use X-Chat on my N800. But I bet some people would enjoy Irssi more anyway.
Sorry, I just thought the reference to X-Chat would be useful because of “First I tried to find an irc-client, but didn’t.”
Well I thought that there were a real client. Now that i think of it, I’ve actually used X-Chat before. Silly me.
But I wasn’t able to install openssh through maemo downloads. Error: “Application package not found”.
hmm, how hard would it be to port irssi?
as long as its provided a cli like environment i would have expected it to be fairly happy.
“The I tried using gaim with irc-protocol, and ended up cursing the program to the hottest and deepest parts of hell. (that program should be made illegal by law)”
perhaps you should give the new ‘pidgin’ another try
http://pidgin.garage.maemo.org/
I use it on my n800 for all my messengers and email notifications (incl. gmail)
Well at first I tried to install pidgin from garage, but it failed due to some dependencies, that I wasn’t able to resolve with a quick google session.
I figured that because pidgin is just a new name for gaim, It’ll be just as awful - I know, I have some issues
thanks a lot
